The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) has partnered with APHL’s Global Health team to bring genomic epidemiologic training to regions around the world via the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network (CZBiohub Network).

CZI is a philanthropic mission co-founded by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, pediatrician and teacher Priscilla Chan, aimed at building a more just, healthier world.

CZBiohub Network is a group of nonprofit research institutes supported by CZI that bring together scientists, engineers and physicians with the goal of pursuing grand scientific challenges on 10- to 15-year time horizons. It focuses on understanding underlying mechanisms of disease and developing new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies.

The CZI/APHL partnership began in 2023 when CZI funded an APHL team to host and lead a one-week training in Bangkok, Thailand, for regional partners on an introduction to genomic epidemiology. The training focused on how to use a free, open-source genomic epidemiology platform called CZ Gen Epi. The user-friendly, web-based platform helps public health officers and laboratory professionals analyze pathogen genomic data so they can track disease outbreaks and variants and develop interventions.

Following the success of this trial training, CZI funded two more international regional trainings on genomic epidemiology with APHL—one that recently took place in Tbilisi, Georgia in partnership with the Richard G. Lugar Center for Public Health, and another scheduled for Colombia later this year. As was the case in Bangkok, the training in Georgia was delivered in a Training of the Trainers (ToT) format. Following each of the ToTs, APHL provides mentorship, planning and logistical support to the trainees so they can then go on to train others within their regions.
